According to friend of the show Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times’ twitter account, the Rays will call up Hideki Matsui prior to their game against the White Sox Tuesday.
Matsui signed a minor league deal April 30th and has played 12 minor league games hitting just .178 with 4 RBI’s with the Triple-A Durham Bulls. He has certainly looked rusty but has put together some better at bats of late.
The Rays will have to make a move before Tuesday’s game in order to make room for Matsui on the roster. The most logical guess for me would be to demote Stephen Vogt back down to the minors. Vogt is hitless in two stints and 17 at bats this season for the Rays.
Matsui played last season with the Oakland Athletics hitting .251 with 12 home runs and 72 RBI’s in 585 plate appearances.
The Rays have been devastated by injuries this season, and anyone who doesn’t think Matsui can make somewhat of an impact to the team should go back and look at not only the lineup Joe Maddon put out against the White Sox Monday, but should also look at the results of Chris Sale’s 15 strikeouts (1 off the White Sox team record).
